Dan Mitchell, FAIA

Founder & Principal

Dan's dad was a master sergeant who spent 25 years teaching management skills to officers. On Saturday mornings young Dan would sit in the back of the classroom listening to his father deliver messages about taking risks, challenging yourself, and being fair. His father's messages became Dan's philosophy of life and his way of doing business.

After receiving his Bachelor of Design from the University of Florida and his Master's degree in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis, he joined Mackey where he planned to work a couple of years before returning to his home state of Florida. He began working on major neighborhood revitalization projects and had the business savvy to capably manage the firm's rapid growth. He was soon named a partner, and in 1992, because of his "can-do" attitude and business acumen, his name was added to the masthead.

For leadership roles in the firm, the AIA, and the community, he was inducted into the AIA's College of Fellows. His primary focus was on legislative issues concerning architects and their practice, championing issues of licensing, education, and professional liability.

After serving as AIA St. Louis Chapter President, and AIA Missouri Director, he received an AIA Missouri Distinguished Service Award for establishing an "awakening" in the architectural community. The following year he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his efforts in serving AIA Missouri.

A key to the firm's success was that Dan was also a technology enthusiast. Always gadget-oriented, he was the first person in the firm to keep appointments on a pocket manager.

If there's a "gone-fishing" sign on his door, he really has gone fishing.
Offsetting his interest in high-tech gadgetry is his passion for fly-fishing which he does during trips to his multi-acre, lodge-style home in Colorado. He makes his own flies and views the sport as an art form—a Zen-like experience that helps him balance his work and his life.
