Bright, Light, and Animated

The renovated Mallinckrodt Center at Washington University in St. Louis received an IIES (International Illuminating Engineering Society) award for “Best Use of Color” at last night’s red carpet event. According to Mackey Mitchell architects Gwynn Zivic and Marcus Adrian, the design strategy for the renovation of the 1970’s student center focused on two main goals: adding program spaces to increase daily foot traffic, and revitalizing public spaces with bold graphics and colorful lighting.  According to Jill E. Carnaghi, Associate Vice Chancellor for Students and Dean of Campus LIfe, “Mackey Mitchell transformed a dark building into one that is bright, light, animated, and accessible, bringing Mallinckrodt Center to a level more befitting a great institution.” Mackey Mitchell Architects, along with Randy Burkett Lighting, succeeded in a renovation project that has added vitality to this important student center activity space and performing arts center.
