Romancing the Stone

What is Tom Moore doing in this photograph at the Old Cathedral?  He’s aligning the bottom of the entablature (archispeak) to see how much stone would need to be removed to try and provide a consistent drip line. Since the existing stone has deteriorated in inconsistent patterns, the challenge is how to redress the stone to create a more consistent line.  According to Tom, a completely straight line would be out of place in an historic renovation.  Mackey Mitchell and Musick Construction are working on a $15 million effort that will restore architectural dignity to the oldest public building still standing in the City of St. Louis. Tom Moore is part of the MMA project team which also includes Gene Mackey, Lea McRoberts, John Brown and Avik Guha.
