August, 2011 Mackey Mitchell staff visited Washington University to see the renovation and expansion of Mallinckrodt Center at Washington University in St. Louis which will reinvigorate and better utilize the center’s prominent site at one of the university’s social and academic crossroads. July, 2011 A recent issue of The ASHA Leader (American Speech Language Hearing Association), published an article by Mackey Mitchell principal partner Steve Emer. “Table Talk: Improving Dining Room Acoustics for Older Adults with Hearing Loss,” discusses acoustical factors and outlines the ideal dining room acoustics for individuals with hearing issues.

July, 2011 According to the NIBS (National Institute of Building Sciences, architecture is an important tool in attracting and retaining the best doctors, nurses, HMO’s and insurance plans as well as the most patients. The St. Louis Business Journal interviewed three local architects to talk about current trends in designing for health care. St. Clare Hospital was conceived as a “Hospital of the Future,” with major design modifications and improvements to patient rooms. HGA and Mackey Mitchell created a model hospital for achieving an ideal patient experience.
July ,2011A A vibrant neighborhood needs strong, community anchors and amenities which is exactly what the Old North Grocery brought to Old North St. Louis when it opened a year ago on July 17th. This month marks the one-year anniversary of bringing healthy, fresh, and affordable foods to the heart of this historic district. Mackey Mitchell architect Jordan Gatewood provided pro bono services to help make the neighborhood’s goal a reality. Pro bono work offered by Jordan, John Burse, and Tom Moore are a vital part of Mackey Mitchell’s ethic of making positive contributions to the community.
July, 2011 The St. Louis Business Journal’s annual ranking of the area’s largest architecture firms was published in the July 1-7 issue. Mackey Mitchell is among the top ten firms which are ranked primarily on the number of licensed architects within the firm. Local projects listed include Washington University in St. Louis, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, McKendree University, Truman State University, and the Soldier’s Memorial Military Museum.
July, 2011 Paul Wuennenberg will be busy at this year’s ACUHO-I Conference. On Monday night, July 11th, he’ll be accepting an S. Earl Thompson Award for his contributions to the collegiate housing profession. The following day, he and two staff members from Washington University in St. Louis will be presenting a talk on “Transitioning from Home to Campus Life,” where they will discuss the psycho-social development of new campus residents and how the physical environment can foster a successful transition from home to college.
July, 2011 Consistently cited as one of the “Best in the Midwest” by Princeton Review’s rating guide, the University of Northern Iowa is getting a new on-campus, apartment-style community, designed to achieve a LEED-silver rating, for 800 residents. June, 2011 Marcus Adrian and interior designer Merrilee Hertlein were flown by private jet to Steelcase’s headquarters in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where they learned more about the company’s research into human behavior and how human preferences inform the workplace. The trip also included a private tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1908 Meyer May house which has been meticulously restored to Wright’s original vision.t
June, 2011 The new South 40 House at Washington University made the cover of College Planning & Management magazine's 2001 College Housing Report. The report features usedful statistics and a comprehensive look at "Keeping Costs in Check." June, 2011 For the second consecutive year, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has been cited by its peers and reported in U.S. News & World Report as an “up-and-coming school.” SIUE was listed as one of only three Midwestern regional universities for recently making “innovative changes in the areas of faculty, student life, campus life and facilities.” In addition to designing the Student Success Center, Mackey Mitchell was the architect for SIUE’s Evergreen Residence Hall, new Greek Housing and a student housing project in Cougar Village.
June 27, 2011 Merrilee Hertlein, Cassie Kromnacker, Gwynn Zivic and Rachel Raterman made their way to this year’s NeoCon show – the largest design exposition and conference in North America. During those three days, they checked out all the best resources and latest products.
June, 2011 Mackey Mitchell presented its design concept for a new residence hall on June 24th to board members at Indiana University in Bloomington. IU was selected as one of three campuses in the country to adopt principles outlined in ACUHO-I’s (Association for College and University Housing Officers International) 21st Century Project, a multi-phased initiative that “reimagined” the future of college and university housing. Mackey Mitchell’s design adopts the four main 21st Century Project guidelines which focus on community, technology, flexibility, and sustainability. Mackey Mitchell’s project team includes Paul Wuennenberg, Dick Kirschner, Javier Esteban, Jordan Gatewood, Dan Schneider and Kelli Reeves.
June 27, 2011 Congratulations to Stacey Wehe for making the St. Louis Business Journal’s Class of 2011′s “30 Under 30″ Award Winners. Stacey is on a roll this year, having also been recognized in Alive Magazine’s “Buzz List,” of St. Louis’s most influential people. All 30 winners will be officially recognized at a special ceremony taking place at The Pageant on Delmar on July 21st
June, 2011 Architect Paul Wuennenberg, AIA, LEED AP will join forces with Jill Stratton, Associate Dean of Students at Washington University in St. Louis, and Tim Bono, Residence Life Graduate Intern at Wash U at this year’s upcoming ACUHO-I Conference in New Orleans for a presentation. On July 12th, during Session 8 of the program, they will discuss how the physical environment can foster a successful transition from “home” to “on-campus living.” Individuals who attend the presentation will learn about the psycho-social development of new campus residents, and how architecture plays an important role in making the transition easier.
June 22, 2011 Architect Nick Naeger registered for the Bike MS Express Scripts Gateway Getaway Ride to help raise funds for people diagnosed with MS. The National Multiple Sclerosis society will use funds collected from the Bike MS Ride to not only support research for a cure, but also to provide programs which address the needs of people living with MS today. Kudos to Nick who has joined the movement toward fighting multiple sclerosis.
June 22, 2011 Gene Mackey delivered talk on the contributions Robert Brookings made to our city, the nation, and the world. The lecture was part of the ongoing Clayton Century Foundation lecture series and was presented in conjunction with the dedication of Robert S. Brookings’ star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame. Brookings'extraordinary vision included the creation of the Washington University Hilltop Campus, as well as the founding of the world-renowned Brookings Institution.
June 3, 2011 Louis Sullivan, called the “father of the skyscraper, the “father of modernism,” and the architect who coined the modernist phrase “form follows function” was the subject of a lecture at the St. Louis Beacon Festival on Friday, June 3rd. Gene Mackey, FAIA, founder of Mackey Mitchell Architects, showed examples of Sullivan’s work and discussed his influence on St. Louis architecture.
June, 2011 An organization called “The Best Colleges,” produced an independent ranking assessment of the “50 Most Beautiful Colleges” in the United States. Mackey Mitchell is proud to have worked on several of these college campuses including the University of Colorado-Boulder; Washington University in St. Louis; the University of Wisconsin-Madison; the University of Notre Dame; Indiana University in Bloomington (photo); Kenyon College; Emory University; and the University of Minnesota. June 2011 SSM St. Clare Medical Center in St. Louis received a 2011 Vista Award in the category of new construction. Presented by ASHE (American Society for Healthcare Engineering), the Vista Awards are considered a national mark of distinction and honor, recognizing the importance of teamwork in the design and construction of healthcare facilities. The team who brought St. Clare Medical Center to fruition includes SSM Health Care, HGA Architects, Mackey Mitchell Architects, Alberici Constructors, KJWW Engineering, and Northstar Management.
June, 2011 Mackey Mitchell is proud to support Habitat for Humanity’s 2011 Build. Architects Matthew Roeder, Tom Peterson, and John Burse, along with BIM Support Specialist Kevin Symons, are assisting HFH with their construction documents by implementing ArchiCAD, Graphisoft’s Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. ArchiCAD (generously donated to HFH by Graphisoft), seeks to reduce the amount of time needed to produce construction drawings as well as evaluate potential design conflicts before they occur during actual construction. May, 2011 The May issue of Architect magazine published their 3rd Annual Ranking Survey of architecture firms across the country, ranking them on three factors; profitability, sustainability ethos, and design quality. Mackey Mitchell climbed the list to number 59, up from number 95 in 2010. According to the magazine's editors, given a good 2011, any of the firms on the list could move up significantly in next year's ranking survey.
May, 2011 The Association of College and University Housing Officers International (ACUHO-I) has awarded Paul Wuennenberg with an S. Earl Thompson Award. Nominated by their peers and based on their talents and efforts to improve the collegiate housing profession, this award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the college and university field. Awards will be presented at the 2011 Annual Conference and Exposition in New Orleans, LA on July 11.
May, 2011 This month marks the official beginning of MMA.edu, an internally developed "best practices" program designed to enhance Mackey Mitchell's continued goal of life-long learning. Spearheaded by principals Javier Esteban and Sara Koester, MMA.edu focuses on lectures, site visits, roundtable discussions, and mentorship programs for all MMA staff members.
April, 2011 On Saturday, April 3Oth, architects Nick Naeger, Gregory Keppel, Tom Moore, Kevin Simons, and Rachel Raterman participated in the March of Dimes 5K Run. A fund- raising goal was established by Mackey Mitchell to match employee contributions up to $1,500. As a result, the firm was able to donate over $3,000 to the March of Dimes, supporting their efforts to help premature babies.
April, 2011 Marcus Adrian attended the 1st Annual Mid-South Autism Conference in Tunica, MS, where Dr. Temple Grandin was the opening speaker. Adrian has been involved in the design of special needs education projects since he worked on the Central Institute for the Deaf (2000) in St. Louis, MO. Grandin's remarks re-affirmed the ideas behind his design philosophy that the way we design places for people with autism can be critical to their success.
April, 2011 Two new people have joined the Mackey Mitchell team. Katherine (Cassie) Kromnacker has 20 years of combined experience in corporate and public library work. She will be providing research assistance and help with the coordination and maintenance of MMA's interior's library. Brandi Ball has been hired to assist in MMA's marketing efforts.
April, 2011 David Helfrich presented his "Architecture in Afghanistan" talk to members of the St. Louis Rotary Club where he discussed the construction of "temporary" war architecture, the local architecture built for use now and by the locals after the war, and the humanitarian efforts he experienced during his deployment to Afghanistan.
April, 2011 Architect Paul Wuennenberg, AIA, ASAI, dedicates his time and talent to architecture and the art of painting and drawing as well. He recently donated a home portrait to the Rainbow Village Art auction, a non-profit organization which helps provide affordable housing for people with developmental disabilities.
April, 2011 Williams Village North at the University of Colorado Boulder is the first residence hall of its size to receive the USGBC's LEED-platinum rating. Opening in August 2011, this residence hall has energy saving features which are expected to use 39% less energy than a baseline building design (based on LEED criteria.) Research indicates that students are becoming more concerned about sustainability issues at the colleges or universities they attend.
April, 2011 As part of the AIGA's (Professional Association for Desgn) St. Louis Design Week program, architects Tom Peterson (MMA) and Susan Pruchnicki (Bond Wolfe) hosted a tour of their new 13,000SF home affectionately referred to as the Big Ass Building (BAB). Located in South St. Louis, the building was originally constructed in 1914 by Southwestern Bell as a telephone exchange. Owner's Tom and Sue shared stories about undertaking this colossal urban renewal project.
April, 2011 Although Paul Wuennneberg had to decline an invitation to be a judge in Washington University's 2nd Annual North vs. South Champion Chef's Competition, he was pleased the event took place at the "Chef's Table," one of the many new dining features at the recently opened "South 40 House," designed by Paul and the Mackey Mitchell design team.
April, 2011 In 2006, MMA principal Paul Wuennenberg was involved in a multi-phased initiative leading to the construction of a new state-of-the-art college residential facility. Sponsored by ACUHO-I (Association of College and University Housing Officers International), the "21st Century Project" was conceived to envision the residence hall of the future. Fast forward to 2011, where three campuses have been named to implement concepts for the project. Paul Wuennenberg is the lead designer for Indiana University at Bloomington which was selected as a host site for a student residential facility that looks to the future.
April, 20111 Design concepts have been finalized for new student housing at McKendree University in Lebanon, Il. The contemporary glass, stone and brick design complements the Mackey Mitchell designed Hettenhausen Center for the Arts (2006) which hosts nationally known performers in drama and music. Scheduled completion date for the new housing project is August, 2011.
April, 2011 The new Teen Library at the Samuel C. Sachs Branch of the St. Louis County Library in Chesterfield, MO, was dedicated and attended by architects Jim Konrad and Rachel Raterman who developed design concepts for the upgrade of "Teen Central."
March 30, 2011 The Eugene J. Mackey Lecture Series at Washington University in St. Louis will present award-winning author and editor Alan Webber, former editor of the Harvard Business Review, who also launched Fast Company in 1995. He has authored several books on business and will be speaking at Washington University's Steinberg Auditorium on The Sam Fox School Campus on April 4 at 6:30 pm.
March 28, 2011 Mackey Mitchell received two awards for its sculptural art made entirely from canned food. The 11th Annual St. Louis CANstruction event focused on "Climate Change and Endangered Species," prompting the idea for the "Croaking Frog." The jurors presented two awards for MMA's structure made of 5,600 cans, including "Structural Integrity," and Juror's Favorite." After deconstruction all the food will be sent to the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry which serves over 4,000 families each month.
March 18-24, 2011 The St. Louis Business Journal's article "Two architects, 13,000SF, one big facelift", tells the story of MMA architect Tom Peterson and partner Sue Pruchnicki's renovation of a 13,000 former telephone swithcing station in Carondelet Park that they are rehabbing themselves. It is a remarkable story of their dedication to breathe live into their unusual home. story here March, 2011 Gene Mackey has been invited to present a lecture at the Lifelong Learning Institute at Washington University in St. Louis, which offers a wide variety of courses that emphasize peer learning and active class participation for seniors. In Gene's talk, "St. Louis Heroes and Their Architect," guests will learn about the political lives and architectural influences of Henry Shaw, Robert Brookings, Ellis Wainwright, and David Francis. The talk will take place on April 7th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Lifelong Learning Institute located at 7425 Forsyth Boulevard , St. Louis MO (former Famous-Barr building).
March, 2011 A select group of St. Louis architects convened at Mackey Mitchell's office to review entries submitted in the 2011 AIA Michigan Design Awards program. The jury included Gene Mackey and Gwynn Zivic from MMA, along with representatives from two other St. Louis firms.
March, 2011 From a pool of 175 nominated projects from eight states, Midwest Construction magazine announced the "Best of 2010 Construction and Design Awards." An Award of Merit in the category of higher education was presented to Mackey Mitchell for the Washington University in St. Louis South 40 Redevelopment project which embodies a European streetscape design. The new student housing and student dining venues contribute to, and positively impact the overall student experience.
March, 2011 The firm was recognized by the National Committee for Employer Suuport of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) for being a Patriotic Employer. Mackey Mitchell architect David Helfrich nominated the firm when he was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. It is unusual for a firm the size of Mackey Mitchell (37) to receive this honor for "contributing to national security...by supporting employee participation in America's National Guard and Reserve Force."

February, 2011 Stacey Wehe has been named to Alive Magazine's "Buzz List," a compliation of the city's most influential people for her work establishing and running the non-profit MothUP St. Louis. Founded over a year ago, MothUP presents regular urban storyslam events featuring true stories told live without notes. The organization promotes local writers and artists, but also creates a place where anyone of any background can share and preserve the stories of their life.
January, 2011 MMA's CANstruction team is preparing for the 11th Annual competition to be held at the St. Louis Science Center in February 2011. The team has finalized the design concept dealing with "endangered species." MMA's fundraising efforts will provide thousands of cans of food to local food pantries.
January 14, 2011 Dedication of the Jean Weisntock Children's Library took place at the Natural Bridge Branch in Normandy, MO. With a $50,000 grant from the St. Louis Cardinals Community Fund, the children's library has undergone a dramatic renovation. Architects Jim Konrad and Rachel Raterman used a baseball theme to enliven the new space. According to the library's assistant director Tim Wadham, "This fun and newly energized room will set the standard for future children's libraries in our country branches."
January/February, 2011 ACUHO-I's publication, "The Talking Stick," asked member architects to discuss how they started in the student housing industry and what higher education theories they refer to that influence their work. MMA principal Paul Wuennenberg was among five student housing experts across the country selected for the interview in the article, In the Minds of Architects.
December, 2010 The St. Louis Regional Commerce and Growth Association presented Mackey Mitchell with an "Award of Achievement" for its outstanding commitment to sustainable business practices and climate prosperity in the St. Louis region through the completion of the St. Louis Green Business Challenge.
December, 2010 MMA staff promotions were announced at the December holiday gala held at the St. Louis Racquet Club. Those named Associate at the event were Nick Naeger, Gregory Keppel and Sandy Gymer. Individuals elevated to Senior Associate were Clint Smith, Greg Frankenfeld, Matthew Roeder, and Stefanie Barnes.
October. 2010 Mackey Mitchell was ranked among the Top 10 "Best Firms to Work For," in a national awards program sponsored by Zweig White, a leading business management firm for the A/E industry. The award was based on compensation, benefits, recognition programs, training, social atmosphere, and firm culture"that continues to inspire ongoing commitment." In a breakdown of various categories, MMA ranked No. 1 in the small firms category.
October, 2010 "Pittsburg State Dedicates Crimson Commons Dorms." The Morning Sun reported on the recent construction of new student housing for students at Pittsburg State University in Kansas City, MO. According to students, the contemporary new townhouse-style residence halls add an attractive option that had been missing from the University experience.
October, 2010 With the goal of bringing affordable, healthy and fresh foods to the residents of Old North St. Louis and surrounding neighborhoods, the Missouri Foundation for Health provided a grant to operate the Old North Grocery Co-op in 2010. Since then ONSLRG has received significant help from a number of agencies and companies. As part of a large group effort, MMA architect Jordon Gatewood helped by providing pro-bono architectural services.
September/October, 2010 Mackey Mitchell is featured in St. Louis Commerce' Magazine's Green Issue which focuses on examples of local companies helping St. Louis become known as a green region. MMA's office manager Kim Hughes talks about Mackey's recyling efforts and steps towards becoming paperless. There's also mention of the firm's weekly, in-house farmer's market with fresh organic vegetables grown and supplied by staff member Debbie Jaeger.

September 16, 2010 Architect and expert on student housing, Paul Wuennenberg, participated in a webcast sponsored by ACUHO-i (Association for College and University Housing International and SCUP (Society for College and University Planning). Titled "Sustainable Residence Hall Renovation: Teach Your Old Dog New Tricks." Paul presented strategies and made recommendations for focusing renovation dollars on areas to maximize impact.
September 14, 2010 The new Student Athletic Life Center at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln was dedicated to commemorate 50,000SF of renovated space at West Stadium to fully serve the academic needs of 600 Husker student athletes. Praised for its recruitment advantage and its "living room-like" environment, the center provides one central hub where student athletes can dine, study, practice and connect quickly to classes on campus.
September, 2010 SSM St. Clare Health Center in Fenton, MO received a Regional Excellence Award sponsored by St. Louis Construction News & Review. MMA's Jim Konrad accepted the award on behalf of Mackey Mitchell at the September awards ceremony. MMA worked in collaboration with HGA Architects in Minneapolis on this award-winning "hospital of the future."
August 12, 2010 MMA's design for the new Southeast Missouri State University Autism Center (SEMO) was featured in the article Autism Center Lauded at Grand Opening Celebration. According to SEMO's director," the efficient new center has significantly improved our processing and evaluation system in a comfortable new building designed specifically with the needs of autism in mind." MMA architects Marcus Adrian and David Helfrich have developed special expertise in architecture for autism.

June 25, 2010 Washington University in St. Louis invited John Burse, AIA, to make a presentation to the Sam Fox School's Alberti Program, a probelm-solving studio workship for young people. He talked about home renovation and shared personal experiences from renovating his own historic home in Old North St. Louis.
June, 2010 Centene announced that Mackey Mitchell will do the interior design renovation for their office space on Park Avenue in New York City. Merrilee Hertlein and Tom Moore will be transofmring the 10,000SF space scheduled for completion in the Fall, 2011.
June, 2010 Paul Wuennenberg, along with John Biernbaum, Director of Housing at Western Illinois University, were featured speakers at the recent ACUHO-i conference in Austin, Texas. In "Class for Clunkers" Paul talked about renovating outdated student housing, student centers, and student dining facilities. Three schemes developed for Western Illinois University were presented, showing options for three different budgets.
June, 2010 Mackey's renovation of the Spink Pavilion at the Missouri Botanical Garden was praised by garden president Peter Raven. He commented on the design's sensitivityvity to the Garden and the incorporation of green design features which reflect the Garden's commitment to advancing sustainability.
June, 2010 Forty delegates from the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACKLE) visited Washington University in St. Louis's police facility designed by architect Tom Peterson, AIA saying it was the "best designed and most technologically integrated" facility they had seen after visiting security projects in the US and abroad.

March, 2010 Three recently completed MMA projects are officially "green." The Oak Street West Residence Hall at the University of Missouri - Kansas City received LEED certification. Wohl Center, Phase I at Washington University in St. Louis is certified LEED Silver. Ryan Hall at the University of Notre Dame is also LEED Silver.

October 1, 2009 "Grass roof on South 40 promotes sustainability, adds green space," is reported by Wash U's publication Record. MMA designed the South 40 House (formerly Wohl Center) and an environmentally friendly "green roof" with grass and native plants. The 10,150 SF roof connects student residences and creates a large grassy area with paths and benches. September, 2009 Saint Clare Health Center received a 2009 Modern Healthcare citation award. Mackey Mitchell worked closely with HGA Architects on the programming of the hospital and provided design services for the Medical Office Building.

Washington University ranked No. 4 in the "Quality of Life" category with high rankings in the subcategories of "Best Campus Food" and "Dorms Like Palaces." September 22, 2009 "UWSP Residence Halls Over 50% Green Energy." UW reports that residential halls at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point are on the front line of the school's quest to become completely dependent on renewable energy resources by 2012 in keeping with a 2007 challenge Governor Jim Doyle issued to the university. Mackey Mitchell, along with architect-of-record Engberg Anderson is designing a new 323-bed residence hall to meet LEED-Silver standards.
September 17, 2009 MMA principal Marcus Adrian, AIA, gave a presentation to the St. Louis Chapter of BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association International) on the design history of Saint Louis University's Chaifetz Arena. Marcus served as project archtiect for the project, described as the "best 10,000-seat" arena in the country.
September 11, 2009 The Belleville News Democrat reported on "A Cool Place to Hang Out." The SIUE Student Success Center is the latest addition to the SIUE campus. Mackey Mitchell worked with students on the design concept which includes a one-stop shop for services, and an all-night coffee bar and study lounge. June, 2009 Firm members worked to extend this year's ACUI Conference theme, "Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow," onto the expo floor by converting the firm's marketing booth into a graffiti wall on which attendees were invited to mark the wall with a paint marker describing what special traditions took place on their campus. June, 2009 Mackey Mitchell provided pro-bono design services to the Jefferson County Pet Rescue and Adoption Center in support of the county's effort to build and raise funds for a new animal control facility. The proposed project, designed for a site in Herculaneum, MO, incorporates green design concepts. Architect Susan Danna brought expertise in animal facilities and veterinary hospitals, while Jordan Gatewood and Stacey Wehe gave form to the Center and its outdoor spaces.

September, 2008 Architects Marcus Adrian and David Helfrich authored an article for Autism Advocate titled, "Comfort, Clarity and Calm," describing how to design a balanced environment for children with special needs. September 26-28, 2008 Mackey Mitchell's annual office tour took place in Milwaukee with a visit to the Milwaukee Art Museum designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Other highlights included a tour of the Harley Davidson Museum and a private tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's famous Johnson's Wax Building. September, 2008 AIA Award The sustainably-designed GroW House received a Distinguished Award in the Unbuilt category in the 2008 AIA Design Awards proram. Jury comments were, "The proposal resists convention and finds new ways of addressing normative construction by incorporating existing alternative technologies. September, 2008 Construction News and Review's article on "Thirteen is Lucky Number for Gene Mackey, III," recognized the fact that Gene was the 13th recipient of the St. Louis AIA Gold Honor Award in its 25 year history.

September 18th, 2008 Gene Mackey was honored with a special reception at the Missouri Botanical Garden for receiving the 2008 St. Louis AIA Gold Honor Award. May, 2008 Thirty members of the US Access Board, a federal agency that develops accessibility guidelines, arranged a tour of MMA-designed Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis. CID was chosen to provide board members with clear evidence of the benefits of good acoustical design. Marcus Adrian AIA, LEED AP, and John Guenther, AIA, LEED AP, were recognized by the board as experts in classroom design for children with a wide range of hearing disabilities. The US Access Board is working on a classroom acoustics initiative that seeks to establish standards for acoustical accessibility in schools.

May 16, 2008 Eugene J. Mackey was presented with the Leslie N. Boney Spirit of Fellowship Award at a ceremony at the National AIA Convention in Boston, MA. March, 2008 Liggett Hall at Washington University in St. Louis received a Building of America Award, sponsored by Construction Communications. After reviewing hundreds of buildings, Liggett Hall was rated as one of the most imaginative, innovative and dynamic projects.
February, 2008 The SIUE/Mackey Mitchell Architects team took the "People's Choice Award" for the second year in a row in the 2008 21st Century Project - Round 2 competition held in St. Petersburg, Florida. The design is based on the principles of cooperation, civility, and communication. The building incorporates sustainable features which respond to the environment with a "Net Zero," carbon footprint. November-December, 2007 Saint Louis Construction News & Review featured "Work Hard - Play Hard: Mackey Mitchell Architects Annual Hiatus Happens in Kansas City MO," in a story about the company's annual trips, which are an integral part of creating a fun place to work.
December, 2007 Under the leadership of Karen Dahl, Mackey Mitchell has made its annual delivery of books, toys, computers, and school supplies to the Grace Hill Children's Center, a community service the firm has practiced for the past ten years.
Promotions were announced at Mackey's annual holiday party held at the Racquet Club. Margie Fank, Merrilee Hertlein, and Kyle Wagner were elevated to Senior Associates. Stefanie Barnes, David Helfrich, Kelli Reeves, and Gwynn Zivic were named Associates.
The Association of College and University Housing Officers - International (ACUHO-I) announced that Mackey Mitchell was one of five finalists in the second phase of its 21st Century Project Design Showcase competition, focusing on the "block and neighborhood." Finalists will present their designs to a jury on February 1, 2008 in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Thomas H. Peterson, AIA, was invited to participate in a panel presentation on "The Future of Professional Practice: The Next Generation of Integrated Delivery, Emerging Technology, and Practice Management," a national AIA event held in Washington D.C.
November, 2007 St. Louis Commerce Magazine featured Webster University's Community Music School, and the new residence halls at SIU-E were featured in the '07 Construction Roundup.
Jim Konrad, AIA, LEED AP served as a jury member for the 2007 Quality Concrete Awards, sponsored by the Concrete Council. The Central Underground Garage at Washington University, designed by Mackey Mitchell, was one of 12 award-wnning projects.
October, 2007 Mackey Mitchell's annual architectural outing took place in Kansas City, MO, October 12-13 with a packed agenda. Local architecture firm BNIM gave MMA a special tour of the new addition to Kansas City's Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The Bloch Building, designed by New York architect Steven Holl, was the architectural highlight of the trip. Other projects visited included the National World War 1 Museum at Liberty Memorial, KC Convention Center and Ballroom, Kauffman Memorial Garden; and A. Zahner Company Metalworks. We also visited HNTB's office; the Downtown Library; Sprint Center, Country Club Plaza, and the Community of Christ World HQ Temple in Independence, MO. Along with an architectural education, the group builds camaraderie by sharing good food ( at Kansas City's Lidia's Loft and Gates Barbeque), spirits, and laughter.
October, 2007 Zweig White Announces 2007 Top 25 Best Architecture Firms to Work For National management consulting and research firm Zweig White identified Mackey Mitchell as one of the top-10 best architecture firms to work for in a new ranking of A/E firms nationwide. Firms were selected based on their commitment to provide a positive work environment, good benefits, and strong dedication to employee training and development.
October, 2007 David Helfrich atttended the first annual Network of Autism Training and Technical Assistance Program (NATTAP) in Columbus, Ohio. The conference was a gathering of professionals and parents from all 50 states and 15 countries, and focused on current models for teaching students, intervention techniques, and current research of environmental factors contributing to autism spectrum disorder.
October 4, 2007 Mackey Mitchell participated in the IIDA (International Interior Design Association) Gala Fashion Event held at the Mad Art Gallery. The challenge for each St. Louis design team was to create wearable art, fashioned from a variety of materials. MMA had two teams: Kyle Wagner, Stefanie Barnes, Kim Hughes, and Rachel Raterman (model), created a dress made from wood laminate chips, leather, and fabric. Tom Peterson (who made a pair of shoes entirely from carpet materials), Merrilee Hertlein, Kathy Ulkus, and Bobbi Litton (model) created a garment made from carpet, and carpet backing.
October, 2007 Several of Mackey Mitchell's projects are on view at the Meramec Contemporary Art Gallery At St. Louis Community College. Meramec is hosting an exhibition entitled process:architecture. It explores design as a process of transformation ranging from the initial concept in the designer's mind to the completed building.

September, 2007 Mackey Mitchell Principal Marcus Adrian attended a roundtable discussion as part of Architect Magazine's ongoing research into their readership. He was one of a small group of architects selected to help explain what professionals look for in an architectural publication.
September 28-October 4, 2007 The St. Louis Business Journal reviewed the new Community Music School at Webster University. "Tuning the Room," is complimentary of the project's acoustics and design.
September 27, 2007 Thomas H. Peterson received a "Drawings Honor Award" in the AIA/CPC Design Awards Program for his watercolor of "Cupples Warehouse in Winter." Jury comments were "This watercolor sketch captured the weight of the building's masonry and offered a sense of winter in St. Louis. The handling of the watercolor was consistent and good, especially since it was done in under an hour, outside, while the snow was falling."
September 27, 2007 The AIA/CPC Design Awards Program took place at the Alberici Headquarters designed by Mackey Mitchell Architects. The Boathouse in St. Louis County was the only project that received a Craftsmanship Award. Juror's comments were "Passion and commitment to a project can sometimes lift craftsmen expertise to a much higher level. This is wonderfully evident thorugh the joinery, materials selection and finish." PK Construction was the construction manager.
August 7, 2007 The University of Missouri presented Mackey Mitchell with a 2007 Showcase Award. Criteria for the honor includes quality of service; commitment to customer service; history of repeat work with the University; and a track record in consistently meeting the University's participation goals for minority and women-owned businesses.
August, 9 2007 After three decades in a converted temple in University City, the Community Music School has settled into its new $7 million home on Webster University's main campus. The project is featured in a St. Louis Post Dispatch article titled "Construction of school's concert hall requires attention to acoustic details."

July-August, 2007 Winners of the local CanStruction competition were announced in Commercial Journal's "About Town" section. Mackey Mitchell received two awards for its 6,500- can structure. An estimated 36,000 canned goods collected from the event were donated to area food pantries.
July 20-26, 2007 A special section of the St. Louis Business Journal featured "Who's Who in Technology," with comments from the designers, builders and lawyers behind the region's high-tech scene. Gene Mackey and Eric Neuner were interviewed.
June, 2007 College Planning & Management magazine featured winners of the 21st Century Project Design Showcase, a multi-phased initiative leading to the construction of a new, state-of-the-art residential facility for colleges and universities. July, 2007 New York theater publication, Lighting & Sound America, featured McKendree University's Hettenhausen Performing Arts Center in Lebanon IL, as a cover story. The six-page article titled "The Center of Lebanon" gives kudos to the design, acoustics and lighting of the $10 million, 34,000SF arts center.
May/June 2007 Commercial Journal features Alberici's corporate headquarters, which joins an elite group as one of only 20 platinum LEED-certified buildings in the world. The issue also features "The Hett," McKendree College's state-of-the-art performing arts center which has has received much acclaim.
May, 2007 The Edwardsville YMCA Meyer Center, designed by Mackey Mitchell Architects, was recognized by the YMCA of the USA for its "Excellence in Facilities." According to the Belleville News Democrat, only 107 facilities have been formally recognized in the last ten years.
April 15, 2007 The Mackey Mitchell design team attended the grand gala opening of the new Community Music School at Webster University. In its new location, the music school connects to the Loretto-Hilton Performing Arts Center (also designed by Mackey Mitchell) and provides a superior learning experience for young musicians.

The topic was "Shaping the Total Sensory Environment for Oral Deaf Education."

March, 2007 The new Hettenhausen Performing Arts Center at McKendree College in Lebanon IL received a Lighting Award in the 2007 IIDA (International Illumination Design Awards) competition.
March, 2007 MMA received two awards in this year's 2007 St. Louis Canstruction Awards program. The team won as "Juror's Favorite" and for "Structural Ingenuity" for their Monarch Butterfly made of 6,500 cans of food. All food items from the event are donated to the St. Louis Area Foodbank and the Jewish Food Pantry. All winners will now compete at a national level. Canstruction design team members were Kyle Wagner, Dave Helfrich, Rachel Raterman and Gwynn Zivic. Other participants were Kim Hughes, Stefanie Barnes, Cindy Petzoldt, and Karen Dahl.
February 2007 21st Century Project Award Winners The SIUE (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) and the Mackey Mitchell team won a "People's Choice Award" for "Best Animated Documentary Short" entitled New Urbanism Meets Student Development. The team was also honored with a "Compelling Community Award," for their design of a residence hall of the future. Sponsored by ACUHO-I, the 21st Century Project demonstrates the organization's interest in forward-thinking ideas and concepts. Mackey Mitchell team representatives were Paul Wuennenberg, AIA and Javier Esteban, AIA. Participants from SIUE were students Justin Allen and Lindsey Gilmore; Michael Schultz, Director of University Housing; and Scott Gluntz and Robert Legate, Associate Directors of Housing.

December 6, 2006 The Belleville News Democrat featured the Hett Center for the Performing Arts in an article titled "Guest view: World-class acoustics ready to be enjoyed." A. Dennis Sparger, conductor of The Masterworks Chorale and The Bach Society of Saint Louis commented, "Music-lovers in the metro-east can rejoice that, at long last, our region now boasts a concert hall that rivals the best in any major city...The architects and builders of the Hett Center have accomplished a magnificent success."
November 2006 The new Hettenhausen Center for the Arts received rave reviews from the performers and those who attended the November 4 black tie gala. The program featured a performance by Grammy Award-winning soprano Christine Brewer, a 1976 McKendree College graduate, who wrote, "Many thanks for exceeding all of our dreams for this wonderful building. It is amazing!." November 2006 Webster-Kirkwood Times. "Vianney Dedicates New Fieldhouse and Commons." The project, designed by Vianney alum Paul Wuennenberg is the school's first major expansion since it opened in 1960. The campaign expresses the school's 25-year master plan with widespread improvements to the educational, athletic and co-curricular facilities as well as the overall 37-acre campus.
November 2006 Sara Koester, AIA and Thomas H. Peterson, AIA were named principals at Mackey Mitchell. Sara is consistently recognized for her technical abilities and her capacity to mentor. She joined the firm in 1989 and quickly gained recognition for her consummate understanding of architecture and the construction process. Tom has contributed to the firm's success with his high standards of excellence, creativity and attention to detail. He has also kept a 45-person firm on the cutting-edge of technology.
October 2006 Architect Thomas H. Peterson, AIA, was a winner in the photography competition sponsored by the AAF/AIA (American Architectural Foundation and the American Institute of Architects.) Winners are featured in the AIA's 2007 calendar. Three of his photographs are included in the publication; one was honored with a Judges' Special Commendation.

October 2006 Stratford Heights won an award for the "Best Community (151 Units & Over) in the Best in American Living Awards" program sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders. All winners will be included in the February issue of Professional Builder magazine. Stratford Heights was designed by Mackey Mitchell, working with Cincinnati architect Cole + Russell. The development links to the University of Cincinnati and provides village-type housing for 700 students.
September 2006 The Alberici Headquarters project received a Merit Award from the local St. Louis Chapter Awards program sponsored by the AIA/Construction Products Council.
September 2006 A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place for the new Residence Halls at Webster University. President Richard Meyers said the new housing improves the quality of campus life at the University in every way. Mayor Gerry Welch commented that the buildings are "a wonderful addition to the community and the University."
September 2006 Mackey Mitchell makes personnel changes. Kimberly Hughes, SDA has been promoted to the position of office manager.
September 2006 Interiors & Sources featured the "Top 10 LEED Projects" in the country with Alberci ranking number one on the list. Since its launch in 2000, the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System, developed by the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council), has survived many growing pains, and now enjoys prominence as the leading standard for high-performance sustainable buildings.
August 2006 Architectural Record/Business Week magazines announced that Mackey Mitchell and Alberici won an international Citation award for Excellence. This year, eight Award of Excellence winners and six Citation for Excellence winners were chosen from 176 entries from 14 countries. The award is based on the premise that good design can help companies work better or redefine themselves. Architects John Guenther, AIA and Andy Noll will accept the award in October at the Innovation Conference in New York.
August 2006 "Today's College Students are Living the Suite Life." As an expert on student housing, architect Paul Wuennenberg was quoted in the St. Louis Post Dispatch in a front-page article about the amenities desired by today's college students.
July - August, 2006 A Performing Arts Center for Southwestern Illinois Construction News & Review. The new Hett Center for the Arts at McKendree College in Lebanon IL, will serve as a learning laboratory for students at the four-year liberal arts college, and will also host a number of nationally known performers in drama and music. The new performing arts center promises to change the landscape for cultural and entertainment events in Southwestern Illinois.
May 2006 “What’s Right With the Region!” Awards John Burse, AIA will accept an award May 11 sponsored by FOCUS St. Louis, honoring 20 organizations, individuals and initiatives that have made a profound difference in the St. Louis region. FOCUS St. Louis is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a thriving, cooperative region by engaging citizens to participate in active leadership roles and to influence positive community change.
April 2006 2006 SMPS Winner Mackey Mitchell’s “green” book titled “Think Green-25 Ways” received an award from the Society for Marketing Professional Services. Developed by Kathy Ulkus, Ed Crader (formerly with MMA) and designer Nate Sprehe, the jurors found the brochure “informative, innovative and extremely effective.”
21 April 2006 Top Ten Green Projects Awards The national AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) selected the Alberici Corporation Headquarters as one of the Top Ten Green Projects for 2006. Throughout the year, the project will be viewed as an exemplar of the standards and goals for sustainable design and construction. It will be recognized in national AIA publications on be displayed at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC, and the AIA convention in Los Angeles.
March 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award Dan Mitchell, FAIA is one of only two individuals in the history of AIA Missouri to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was in honor of Dan’s 25-year dedication to championing legislative issues related to the architectural profession.
