student housing
Education City
Doha, Qatar
Mackey Mitchell was invited to participate in a design competition for new Male and Female Student Housing facilities on the prestigious Education City Campus in Doha, Qatar. Our design, which was presented to Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser al Missned, was well received by Qatar Petroleum, the Qatar Foundation, as well as Her Highness.
- MMA's design for a beautiful, secure environment for the students responded to multiple influences, including the environment, the site's ecology, sociological considerations, and religious influences. With separate and distinct public and private spaces, the residential component was designed to be reached through controlled-access points, while the more public spaces were carefully arranged within the pavilion at the development's "front door." The private courtyard in the center of the site offered shady respite from the heat.
- The buildings were intended to serve as an educational model, with an innovative and distinctive look based upon sustainable design principles to show that architecture can be beautiful, accommodating, and functional all while user fewer precious resources and working with the local climate. The "smart building" would take full advantage of technology to help monitor and control building functions.
