Robert E. Knoll Residential Center
- Mackey Mitchell was selected as the student housing design architect (with BVH as Architect-of-Record) to design a new LEED certified all-suites facility to complement the current mix of traditional doubles for freshmen and apartments for upperclassmen. Suites include four single-bedroom and two double-bedroom units with a few single-occupancy studios. The units include living rooms, a small kitchenette, and a compartmentalized bath for maximum flexibility.
- The site was an existing parking area at a busy intersection. To conserve parking, the building was placed near the street. An "S" plan provides two large courtyards for light and outdoor space. An open, airy stair adjacent to the elevators encourages students to walk, rather than ride, to their floors.
- A two-story pavilion, located in one of the courtyards, provides a highly visible focal point. The pavilion includes the front desk, building lounge, multi-purpose/activity room, breakfast dining area and a convenience store.
