As summer winds down, we’re grateful for the impact our 2025 interns made on our studio. They brought curiosity, creativity, and fresh perspective to our work, and they left their mark on both our projects and our culture.

At Mackey Mitchell, our internship program is designed to be more than a summer job. It’s a chance to step into the full rhythm of architectural practice with the support of mentors and teammates. From day one, interns join real project teams, contributing ideas and gaining skills while receiving guidance that helps them grow as designers.
Immersive Learning
We believe the best way to learn architecture is by experiencing it. This summer, our interns did just that by exploring historic landmarks, visiting active construction sites with national clients, joining design charrettes, and navigating new design software.
A highlight of the summer was touring the Frank Lloyd Wright House at Ebsworth Park, where the group experienced firsthand how legacy and precedent continue to influence design today.
They also visited the inventive renovation of a former telephone exchange building, transformed into a home and workshop by Mackey Mitchell Principal Tom Peterson, AIA, LEED BD+C, and his partner Sue Pruchnicki, FAIA. Affectionately referred to as the BAB (Big-Ass Building), this project showcased their resourceful approach to repurposing a dilapidated building while preserving history.
Beyond that, each intern had unique opportunities that played to their strengths and interests:
Michael Giachino, a Washington University graduate student with a background in both architecture and anthropology, jumped right into the creative process on a long-range master plan for a large outdoor camp and recreation property. Michael was also given a tour of the University of Notre Dame’s campus, allowing him the unique opportunity to oversee the construction progress of the South Quad residence hall.
Katelyn Fuller, a graduate student at the University of Kansas with a passion for preservation and design-build, contributed to three major higher education projects, where she strengthened her perspective on balancing history with innovation.
My time at Mackey Mitchell has been incredibly helpful in expanding my practical skillset and my design thinking skills. I have truly enjoyed getting to work with everyone, this has been such a wonderful summer!

Matthew Louis, also at KU, brought his construction and fabrication experience to life during site visits at Furman University and the University of Oklahoma, where his maker’s mindset translated beautifully to full-scale design. He also applied those skills on a K–12 project, creating 360-degree interior renderings that elevated client presentations and streamlined team coordination.
Christopher Tobin, our CityStudioSTL Fellow pursuing dual master’s degrees in Architecture and Urban Design at Washington University, played a key role in Cornerstone STL’s West End and Visitation Park event. His passion for inclusive, community-centered design was evident as neighbors explored temporary traffic-calming installations and renderings of their community’s future.
A Culture of Connection
The summer wasn’t just about project work. Our interns joined in pool parties, happy hours, bowling, an old-fashioned ice cream social, and even a spirited BBQ showdown. These moments outside the studio helped build connections that turned teammates into friends, making the summer that much more memorable.

Looking Ahead
As we wrap up the season, we couldn’t be more proud of what Katelyn, Matthew, Michael, and Christopher accomplished. Each brought unique skills, passions, and perspectives that enriched our work and reminded us of the bright future of design.
We’re especially excited that Christopher and Matthew will continue with us part-time during the school year, keeping their momentum going while building even more experience.
To our 2025 interns: thank you for your energy, your ideas, and the joy you brought to our team.
