Azalea Hall is a 412-bed residential community on the Mississippi State University campus. Significant auxiliary spaces include a dining hall, community recreation lounge with an open kitchen, and a large multipurpose space designed to serve as a storm shelter. A glass-enclosed community lounge bridge connects two sections of the building, offering views of students moving through the site while framing a view toward the Chapel of Memories monument.
Shape
The pod-style residential design features single-bed units and centrally located restrooms, balancing students’ desire for privacy with opportunities for community interaction. Rather than relying on long, enclosed corridors, the floor plan bends and turns across the site to create an open, light-filled environment. Distinctively shaped pod lounges with kitchenettes maximize daylight and strengthen visual connections throughout the building, supporting a more welcoming residential experience. The building’s unique form also shapes the surrounding landscape, creating outdoor spaces of varying scales that support a range of activities and program needs.
Inspire
Mississippi State University developed a set of design principles, The Architecture of Mississippi State University, to guide a timeless and cohesive architectural character as the campus continues to grow. More affectionately known as “Bulldog Architecture,” after the university’s mascot, the principles draw inspiration from beloved campus buildings within the “vernacular-classical spectrum” and reflect an appreciation for Southern classical architectural traditions. Working closely with the university, the design team translated these principles into Azalea Hall, creating a building that feels connected to Mississippi State’s architectural legacy while helping establish a precedent for future campus development.
It’s been incredible to watch the team work together to provide all the desired amenities while still respecting architectural details, outdoor environments, and the overall campus master plan.
