Visitation Academy’s Middle School renovation transforms approximately 14,000 square feet of former dormitory space into a vibrant, future-ready learning environment. The project includes nine new middle school classrooms, a commons area, flexible small gathering spaces, and new locker bays along a daylit corridor overlooking the courtyard. Designed for flexibility and adaptability, the learning spaces support evolving pedagogies and technology needs while maintaining a warm, home-like atmosphere appropriate for middle school girls. The project team collaborated closely with leadership at Viz, including Head of School David Colón and Middle School Principal Angie Jung, along with Cobalt Construction Consulting, PARIC, ASDG, RTM, and ColorArt.

As the first implementation phase of Mackey Mitchell’s 2018 Master Plan for Viz, this project reimagines historic dormitory-style space to create a home for middle school students. Working within the constraints of a center-loaded corridor and existing structural columns, the design team created classrooms scaled for middle school learners while maintaining flexibility for different teaching methodologies, including experiential and project-based learning. Corridor spaces are activated with social hubs and views to the courtyard, encouraging informal connections between students. By involving administrators and faculty early in the process, the design reflects a deep understanding of how learning happens beyond the classroom — supporting a culture of aspiration toward the Upper School and helping stabilize enrollment in a competitive educational landscape.

This strategic, high-impact renovation strengthens Visitation Academy’s ability to retain lower school students and attract new families by offering a distinct, purpose-built middle school environment. The project positions Viz to thrive during a critical decade marked by demographic challenges and increased competition from other independent schools. Students now experience a greater sense of ownership, connection, and community, all within spaces designed to support their academic and personal growth. For Mackey Mitchell, this project reinforces our leadership in Learning Environments Innovation — showing how thoughtful design can be a vital tool for survival, sustainability, and student success in a rapidly changing private education market.
In a space designed just for them, our Middle School girls are encouraged to explore their interests, build confidence, and engage deeply in activities and discussions that align with their developmental stage.
