Hi!

The Alberti Program: Architecture for Young People

The Alberti Program is a problem-solving studio workshop, combining architecture, community, and the environment for 4th-9th grade students from underserved schools in the St. Louis Public Schools District and surrounding districts. Students get an extraordinary opportunity to learn creative and critical thinking, and throughout the course, develop communication skills through group activities and presentations. Spring, summer and fall sessions are all held in the architecture studios at Washington University in St. Louis.

The program was created by Bruce Lindsey, dean of the College of Architecture and the Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design, and is directed by Anu Samarajiva. Washington University undergraduate and graduate students teach small groups of students working on creative questions that engage sustainability and design.

Mackey Mitchell has created this webpage to increase awareness of this worthwhile program. We hope that our clients, colleagues and all visitors to our website will become advocates of the Alberti Program, which inspires many young students and is contributing positively to our community.

Architects at Mackey Mitchell have given presentations to classes, we have provided financial support, and we hope to motivate others to contribute as well.

There are many ways to support The Alberti Program:

  • Be a guest lecturer, or host a field trip or site visit
  • Donate materials and supplies, either new or re-purposed
  • Give tax-deductible financial support

If you would like to volunteer or donate supplies, contact Anu Samarajiva at anuradha@wustl.edu.

For financial support links, please scroll to the bottom of this page.

Where do financial contributions go? There are three Alberti sessions each year, and funds are needed all year round. Funding goes to support supplies & materials, for model building & creative exploration; healthy delicious lunches and snacks for students (many of whom receive free and reduced lunch during the school year); and stipends to support the summer student teachers and coordinator.
