From Wohl to "Wow" at Wash U

Washington University in St. Louis embarked on a significant investment in their food service operation and living/learning community that will completely change the paradigm of dining on campus. The original Wohl Center had operated as the main commissary kitchen for half-a-century. The new South 40 House buildings, (LEED Silver and LEED Gold) are designed to recall images of a European town center. To address the holistic needs of students and implement the university’s commitment to an exceptional undergraduate residential experience, Mackey Mitchell collaborated with WU to create student housing, a living/learning center, and student dining facility that enhances community, promotes interaction, and fosters learning.  This approach to students’ overall education enhances the quality of their learning, leads to deeper connections, and fosters meaningful relationships. The design team’s goal was to make Washington University in St. Louis a national leader in providing a facility that serves as a model for other institutions.
