A Hundred-Year Building

Mackey Mitchell has been working with Webster University for 20 years and recently completed the East Academic Building at Webster University as part of the design team in collaboration with  Robert A.M. Stern Architects. Construction News & Review   revealed how the  building was simple in appearance, yet complicated in execution. The big story is the airtight building envelope system where the insulation is on the exterior instead of inside all cavities,so that it doesn’t cause condensation and mold growth on the interior.  “When constructed,” according to a Mackey Mitchell architect, “it looked like the building was wearing a wet suit. “We have a metal stud building,” he continued. “When you want that kind of building to last 100-plus years, controlling moisture is vital. Utilizing an air barrier system  is how we met Webster’s goals for longevity within their budget.”
