Award-Winning Renovation

The Association of College Unions International (ACUI) recently presented  (April 8th) the Memorial Student Center at the University of Wisconsin-Stout with a Facility Design Award of Excellence at ACUI’s 2014 conference. The award was presented jointly to UW-Stout  and Mackey Mitchell Architects. The award not only focuses on design, but most importantly how the building supports community building and student learning. The student center was transformed from dark, outdated spaces into a vibrant community gathering space with more lounges, open pedestrian corridors, a grand open staircase, and bright new meeting and dining areas. According to Chancellor Charles W. Sorensen, the real winners are the students, faculty, staff, and residents who use facility. Since its opening, the student center has seen an increase in daily traffic, university programs, and community events.  Mackey Mitchell’s project team included Dan Mitchell, John Burse, Jim Konrad, Clint Smith, Stacey Wehe and Merrilee Hertlein.
