Grand Experience in Grand Rapids

It was an experience of a lifetime for architect Marcus Adrian and interior designer Merrilee Hertlein when they were flown by private jet to Steelcase’s headquarters in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where they learned more about the company’s research into human behavior and how human preferences inform the workplace.  The trip also included a private tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1908 Meyer May house. Purchased by Steelcase in the early 1980’s, the home  has been meticulously restored to Wright’s original vision, including authentic designs for windows, rugs, furniture, and light fixtures reproduced from Wright’s original shop drawings.  After cocktails and a tour, the group enjoyed a 5-course dinner by a private chef.  According to  Merrilee, “The insight we gained from the research done by Steelcase was brought to light during our visit to the Meyer May home. It became clear that Frank Lloyd Wright understood how environment affects us…and he was a master at translating that knowledge into design.”
