Student Centered

ACUI’s (Association of College Unions International) has published the Memorial Student Center at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in their 2013 issue of The Bulletin (page 31). The renovated building opened January 22, 2012 and has been transformed through the design efforts of Mackey Mitchell  working in association with Frisbie Architects. The 25-year-old student center now has improved dining, more natural light, sustainable design features, improved traffic flow, and an emphasis placed on openness and visibility. Through an open-forum programming format, MMA was able to clarify what students, faculty, and the greater community wanted in the new building.  According to student center director Darrin Witucki, “The center is alive with activity and has re-established itself within the fabric of the campus community.  A building that was struggling to attract traffic has now reclaimed its position as the heart of campus.”  Mackey Mitchell’s project team included Dan Mitchell, John Burse, Jim Konrad, Clint Smith, Stacey Wehe and Merrilee Hertlein.
