Veterans Day with Soldiers Memorial + Mackey Mitchell Architects

This morning, Mackey Mitchell Architects had the honor of hosting a Veterans Day Commemoration in partnership with the Missouri Historical Society and Soldiers Memorial Military Museum. The morning offered a meaningful pause for reflection, gratitude, and connection as our team and guests gathered to honor those who have served and continue to serve our country.

A Morning of Meaning

The event began in our St. Louis studio with remarks from Mark Sundlov, Managing Director of Soldiers Memorial, who shared the powerful history and enduring legacy of the museum. His presentation reminded us that Soldiers Memorial is more than a building—it is a living tribute to courage, sacrifice, and the preservation of collective memory.

Guests and team members also took part in creating a Wall of Honor, where they added the names of loved ones who have served or are currently serving. This simple act became one of the most touching moments of the morning, offering everyone a chance to reflect on personal connections to service and gratitude.

One of our guests, Dave, a Navy veteran, shared how much the morning meant to him. He especially enjoyed the presentation, guided tour, and wreath-laying ceremony—summing it up with a smile: “It was a great morning.”

Remembering Together

Following the presentation, guests traveled by shuttle to Soldiers Memorial for a guided museum tour and wreath-laying ceremony. The visit deepened the sense of reflection as we explored exhibits honoring generations of service members and their stories of dedication and sacrifice.

We were especially grateful to meet Isabelle Heidbreder from the French Society of St. Louis, whose warmth, insight, and fascinating historical context added richness to the morning.

A Shared Commitment

Events like this remind us of the importance of community partnerships. We are sincerely grateful to Mark Sundlov and the entire Missouri Historical Society team for their generosity in sharing the Soldiers Memorial banners and for their ongoing commitment to preserving and celebrating St. Louis’s history. Their work ensures that the sacrifices and stories of veterans continue to inspire future generations.

At Mackey Mitchell, we hold Soldiers Memorial close to our hearts. It stands as a reminder that the spaces we design, whether they are places to live, learn, or gather, are connected by a shared purpose: to create community, foster belonging, and honor those who make it possible.

Continuing the Tradition

As we reflect on this year’s commemoration, our team is hopeful that this gathering will become an annual tradition. We are proud to celebrate the service of those who have protected our freedoms and to partner with organizations that share our belief in remembrance through design, education, and community.

To all who have served and to those who continue to serve—thank you!
