New Neighborhood for U of I Students

In June, 2013, students at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign campus will be living in a modern neighborhood-style student environment.  The multi-phased program will form the $64 million Ikenberry Commons that will feature rooms that provide space and privacy for students. Designed with sustainability features and energy efficiencies, the project team will seek to achieve USGBC’s LEED Gold certification. After demolition of the residence halls built in the 50’s and 60’s, unofficially known as the “Six Pack,” Ikenberry Commons will have a new central lawn providing a sense of place, along with lounges and places that will encourage social interaction.  Working with FGM Architects, Mackey Mitchell’s project team includes Gregory Keppel, Nick Naeger, and Rachel Raterman.
